Pakistan International Airlines began its professional career in the year 1946 as the flag-carrier airline of Pakistan. At the outset of its career, the airline was known as Orient Airways. Though PIA is known as the national of Pakistan, the foundation of the airline was laid even before the country came into to existence. It was in 1946 when the founding father of the nation, Muhammad Ali Jinnah, felt the need of an airline for the new country.
